Navigating the Future Student Life in Canada : Understanding the New IRCC Rules and Post-Graduation Work Permit

However, recent changes in the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) rules have introduced new requirements and limitations for students who aim to stay and work in Canada after graduation. Eligibility for Post-Graduation Work Permit

To be eligible, students must have completed a program of at least eight months at a DLI, including public post-secondary institutions, CEGEPs in Quebec, and certain private post-secondary schools in Quebec that operate under the same rules as public schools.

New IRCC Rules and Changes

1.ProgramLength and Eligibility:

  • Master’s Degree Programs: Students who graduate from master’s degrees of less than two years (but at least eight months) are now eligible for a 3-year PGWP, aligning with more extended
  • Public College Programs: Graduates from public college programs will only be eligible for a 3-year PGWP if their program is linked to an area of high labor market

2. Language Proficiency: 

  • Language Requirement: Starting November 1, 2024, all applicants must demonstrate a minimum language proficiency in French or  University graduates must meet Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 7, while college graduates require CLB level.

3. Study Requirements: 

  • In-Class Studies: Until August 31, 2024, students must complete at least 50% oftheir program in Canada, either online or in-class. Starting September 1, 2024, at least 50% of the program must be completed in class in Canada.

4. Application Deadline:

  • ApplicationWindow: Students have 180 days to apply for a PGWP after receiving their transcript and an official letter from the DLI confirming the completion of their
